Stop Algae Now!

Recent inclement weather has been causing a lot of pools to turn green. Some key things to remember:

  • Rainfall can wash debris into your pool, causing your chlorine demand to be much higher than normal.
  • Maintaining your Water Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) level between 30 – 60ppm will help chlorine more resilient against sunlight, and therefore more effective against algae.
  • Regular testing is imperative to keep track of your Free Chlorine and pH as it changes.
  • The earlier you stop algae, the easier it is to get rid of.

  1. If your pool has turned green, we recommend the following procedure to eliminate algae:
  2. Scoop the pool to remove any leaves and other debris.
  3. Test water and ensure that pH is between 7.2 and 7.6.
  4. Add 1L of Algon’s Algatac per 50,000L.
  5. Run the filtration system on ‘Recirculate” for 4 hours to allow the Algatac to spread throughout the pool.
  6. Brush the pool walls to remove any algae growths. The use of Algatac makes it much easier to brush off stubborn algae.
  7. Shock dose the pool to 20ppm of Free Chlorine using either Liquid Chlorine (1.5L per 10,000L) or Chlorine Granules (310g per 10,000L).
  8. Run the filtration system on ‘Filter’ for 8 hours.
  9. ‘Backwash’ and then ‘Rinse” the filter and test the water to check the Free Chlorine level
  10. Add more Chlorine as required to achieve the 20ppm shock level.
  11. Run the filtration system on ‘Filter’.

Once the algae is dead the water may turn grey or milky white. Whilst this will filter out over several days, we can speed up the process by flocking the pool.

  1. Add 1L of Pool Master Pool Pac (Liquid Floc) per 50,000L.
  2. Run the filtration system on ‘Recirculate’ for 1 hours.
  3. Turn the filtration system off for 24 hours. During this time the suspended particles will drop down to the bottom of the pool.
  4. Vacuum the pool to ‘Waste’.
  5. Repeat this process if necessary.

If you have an ongoing Algae problem, make sure that your chlorine dosing is regular and of sufficient quantity. If problems persist, bring us in a sample of water as you may other problems such as high phosphate levels.

Hints & Tips

Paramount Pools come in two different types. In Ground Pools are designed to be situated within the ground, and are well suited for decking, or tiled surrounds.
